There is something special about places that are quite touristic in the summertime and almost empty during the European winter. Croatia is one of those places. In summer, many people from Germany and Austria travel there by car since it’s quite accessible. But in winter, only the locals remain — especially in the northern part of the country, like Istria.

Whenever I get the chance to go there off-season, I take it. The atmosphere of these quiet villages and cold beaches gives me a romanticized sense of nostalgia — like a Lana Del Rey song or photographs from decades ago.

Another plus is that it’s an amazing place to work if you’re lucky enough to have a remote job or be self-employed like I am. There aren’t many distractions, the mind feels freer, and I can truly focus, reflect, and slow down.
